Payroll Clerk Job Description

A payroll clerk ensures employees are paid accurately and on time. To succeed in this role, individuals must have strong attention to detail, a solid understanding of payroll systems and a commitment to confidentiality. A high school diploma is generally required, and some employers may prefer candidates with an associate degree or some college coursework in accounting or a related field. Experience with payroll software and basic accounting principles is a plus.

Typical payroll clerk duties:

Collecting and verifying timekeeping data for all employees

Calculating and issuing paychecks and making direct deposits

Calculating overtime, holiday, and vacation pay

Preparing and issuing tax forms, such as W-2s and 1099s

Reconciling payroll reports for accuracy
