This role requires advanced strategic planning, negotiation, communication and management skills. Individuals assuming vice president of finance positions generally have at least 10 years of experience in accounting, finance or treasury. Public accounting experience is highly valued. Many companies prefer candidates with a master’s degree in finance or business administration and/or a professional certification such as a CPA.

Ensuring compliance with state and federal regulationsEstablishing and maintaining sound relationships with financial institutions, including commercial and investment banksMaking recommendations to optimize investments of financial capitalCoordinating and managing the annual budget processConducting forecasting and planning activities and completing ad hoc projectsCommunicating the company’s actual performance versus budgets and objectives to senior management; recommending growth strategies, as well as identifying areas for improvementCollaborating with leaders of other departments to prepare for critical business opportunitiesHiring, training and retaining finance staff
