Known for their technical expertise and tactical managerial skills, CTOs evaluate new technology and decide how it can benefit their organization and its clients. They oversee the design of — and make recommendations to executive management regarding — technology solutions to uphold the policies and instruction provided by the CIO. CTOs collaborate with various departments to execute the company’s technology vision. CTO candidates typically have a degree in computer science (some firms prefer candidates with an MBA) or a related field and at least 10 years of experience in IT management and strategy. Candidates need excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to plan and complete projects within time and budget constraints.
