They apply strong strategic planning, communication and analytic skills in implementing computer systems and ensure the effective, efficient and secure operation of all automated data processing systems. They must collaborate effectively with other senior managers in defining, articulating and championing the firm’s IT requirements. A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems or a related area is expected, and a master’s degree is often required by employers. CIOs typically have at least seven years of managerial experience in all phases of computer operations, though larger firms may require more.
