What's it like working as a recruiter for The Creative Group or with TCG as a freelancer or hiring manager? Why are our staffing and recruiting professionals in the best position to help you find a job or creative talent?
To answer these questions and more, we bring you The Recruiter Files, a series profiling TCG team members. Our hope is that you'll better understand who we are, what we do, why we do it and how we can be a career or hiring resource to you.
This month, we spoke with Casey Burke, division director of our Atlanta team.
What did you do before you joined TCG?
I was at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, working with career services and employers, helping incoming students from their first day of school up until their first job. Now that I'm at TCG, the process is very similar. I strive to match candidates with employers and figure out which environment would be best for each person based on his or her work style and level of experience.
What do you like most about your job?
When a candidate gets the perfect job and everything clicks into place – that is when I love my job the most!
What trends are you seeing in the creative industry and what advice do you have for someone trying to break into the field?
We've seen an uptick in work in general. Many companies are hiring for positions across the marketing space. My advice for those pursuing work in this industry is to take on as much relevant work as possible – even pro bono projects – to build up your portfolio. Pursue internships or even ask to shadow an employee at a company you admire and in a position you are interested in.
Are there any particular jobs that are in high demand in the Atlanta area?
Tech-related roles, like interaction designers, UX specialists, and UI and web developers, are highly sought. High-tech company growth has been on the rise across the country – and Atlanta consistently appears on top tech industry job growth lists – resulting in a great deal of opportunities for creative talent.
When and where do you feel most creative?
I'd say my kids' play room. It's where I keep my crafts and supplies, and seeing how they use these tools and all of their toys and artwork inspires me to look at everyday items in a different way.
Any tips for job seekers who are considering working with a recruiter?
Don't hesitate to reach out early. Even if you are thinking about exploring new jobs, give us a call. There's no charge for speaking with us and we often have well-established relationships with companies you are trying to get into.
What's the best career advice you've received?
Do your best every day. Regardless of where you are working and what you are doing, work hard. It's the work ethic and attitude that people will remember you by.
