The Payroll Manager oversees the payroll function to ensure accurate, compliant, and efficient processing of employee pay across New Zealand operations. This leadership role is responsible for managing payroll systems, ensuring IRD compliance, and driving process improvements aligned with employment legislation and organisational policy.

Payroll Manager duties and responsibilities of the job

Key responsibilities of a Payroll Manager include:Leading end-to-end payroll processing across multiple pay cycles and business unitsEnsuring full compliance with the Holidays Act, KiwiSaver, ACC, and IRD obligations including PAYE and FBTManaging payroll audits, year-end reporting, and reconciliations with a high degree of accuracyOverseeing payroll system configuration, upgrades, and data integrity (e.g. Xero, MYOB, Datacom, SAP)Developing and implementing payroll policies and procedures in line with legislative changesProviding strategic support to HR and Finance teams on remuneration, leave liability, and workforce reportingManaging and mentoring payroll staff to ensure high performance and compliance standardsLiaising with external auditors, IRD, and legal advisors on payroll mattersSupporting internal stakeholders with payroll insights and resolving complex queries

Payroll Manager job qualifications and requirements

A diploma or degree in payroll, accounting, or business administration is preferred. NZQA-recognised payroll certifications are advantageous.Requirements include:5+ years’ experience in payroll, including team leadership or managementIn-depth knowledge of New Zealand payroll legislation and IRD compliance processesProven ability to manage high-volume, multi-site payroll operationsProficiency in payroll and ERP systems (e.g. SAP, Datacom, MYOB, Xero)Strong analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skillsExcellent stakeholder management and communication abilities
