Candidates for a senior software engineer position should have deep and broad information systems experience. This should be matched with excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills and a capacity to maintain an overview of projects/systems. Candidates should be highly adept at programming with good coding practices, have superb writing and verbal skills with an emphasis on tact and negotiation, and be able to skillfully share their knowledge while working constructively as part of a team. Some experience with DevOps or Agile is sought. As part of their participation in the design and development of complex software, senior software engineers are expected to produce and review source code, manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment and apply engineering principles to designs. Most jobs require a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related discipline, and many senior software engineers have a post-graduate qualification such as a Master’s degree. At least seven years of experience, particularly with the relevant programming languages, is generally preferred.
