Where would you be without a law clerk to help you out most days? Whether it's drafting documents, interviewing clients or preparing motions, law clerks are an indispensable part of many law offices, companies and not-for-profits. That's why it's so important to let these team members know how much you appreciate all their hard work.
In fact, our research found that feeling appreciated is the second most important workplace happiness factor in all of North America.
While it's easy to get caught up in day-to-day tasks and forget to acknowledge this key member of your team, there are several simple ways to say "thank you" to law clerks:
Tailor your praise
Some individuals like public recognition in a group meeting, others prefer an in-person thank-you or a written note. Consider what form of praise they would prefer.
Be specific
There's a big difference between saying, "Thank you for doing a great job," and "We wouldn't have succeeded if it weren't for your hard work these last six months on our two high-profile cases."
Say thanks for smaller things, too
Praising someone for their assistance at the end of a huge project is great, but don't forget to recognize law clerks for things such as conducting excellent research for a case or handling a challenging client. These smaller, day-to-day actions are part of what make these individuals so good at their job.
Be timely
If a law clerk does an outstanding job on a project or presentation, let them know as soon as possible. Feeling appreciated is motivating for almost everyone — and can help with retention.
